Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (DX11) 3D Vision Fix

3D Vision Fix by mike_ar69 & bo3b

Special Thanks to DHR for additional shader fixes.

Special Thanks to helifax for UI tweak version.

Fixed
1. Shadows.
2. Lights.
3. Fog.
4. Smoke.
5. Fire.
6. Explosions.
7. Special effects.
8. HUD (partial).
9. Crosshair (Partial).

Known Issues
1. Disable Order Independent Transparency.
2. HUD is put at screen depth except for cross-hair.
3. Cross-hair fix defines a small area in the screen center and some other hud elements (like the map) are also affected.
4. Menus are mostly at screen depth except some parts which stick out the screen.
5. Sun rays are a bit wrong, but not too bad.
6. Particle effects are correct for normal gameplay and 19:9 aspect ratios, but are incorrect for the benchmark and when in wraith mode using the bow.
7. The game has some noticeable "triangle flicker" at the screen edges.  This not to do with the fix.

8. We also know that some areas will have additional effects we need to fix, since we have not played the whole game yet.

Drivers and Performance
1. Game performs really well.  We tested on non-SLI 770 and 760, and on SLI 760 and 770.  Even with the non-SLI cards, performance was really smooth.
2. We recommend using 344.65 driver (and later).
3. Earlier drivers have SLI issues.
4. You might get a crash at launch on some drivers in SLI. If so, disable SLI for first launch so it can cache shaders, then re-enable it.
5. SLI scaling is excellent (near 100%).
6. We recommend "High" settings rather than "ultra".  We can't find any noticable difference visually, but performance is much better on "high".

Installation

Steps:

1. Extract this zip file to the games exe directory. In my case this is J:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\ShadowOfMordor\x64.
2. Play the game.
3. The first time you play it may take a minute to start as shaders get cached.

We've made numerous updates to the fix since our first one, and the link above is the best one at present.  This includes a few more shaders to fix the final missions in the game, and adds some better UI management.

The UI changes a lot, and there are multiple ways to leave the menus.  Automatically after you win a fight, via the buttons in lower left, escape key, or the key used to enter (like M for map).  So, there is a good chance you will wind up back at game with the UI stuck at screen depth.  As soon as you move with W key, it will be set back to game play mode.

If you really need to, you can use F3 and F4 to go to Menu Mode and Play Mode respectively.  You probably want to set Play Mode with F4 when you are in Sauron's Army screen, as it looks great.

F2 is a cycle through multiple depths, so you can choose what you like.  Once you get a preference, you might want to set that as the x item so it is default. Or feel free to edit the list to suit.

Use ` (back quote) key to alternate play/menu mode and max depth.  This helps when something is annoying in the upgrade menus.

Presets:
  • Esc: Put it in Menu Mode.
  • M: Put it in Menu Mode
  • W: Put it in Play Mode.
  • RButton: Aiming override to put cursor to maximum depth.
  • `: toggle play/menu mode, use while in menus.
  • F2: Cycle through 8 depth variants,  x = -0.3, -0.2, -0.1, 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.8, 0.99
  • F3: Put it in Menu Mode, which forces some UI to screen depth.
  • F4: Put it in Play Mode, which allows UI to follow the current F2 depth.
In the d3dx.ini
x= UI depth in %, negative is popout.
z=1 is Play Mode, z=0 is Menu Mode.
w=0 for aiming crosshair, set to 1 when RButton is down.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Older versions in case you have trouble with the primary one.

1) Early version, no keys: https://github.com/bo3b/3Dmigoto/releases/download/0.99.4-beta/3Dmigoto-Mordor-0.99.4.zip

I've added 2 presets on keys:
Z - puts a low convergence (usable in Army menu)
X - puts low depth and low convergence (usable in all other menus)
3) Update 6-8-15: Shadow of Mordor 1.1.16 Beta.7z

Update to UI shaders to improve their depth, and make it more flexible.  This might get one more tweak, but should be very good as it is.  This includes the 1.1.16 version of 3Dmigoto which should work well. If you have problems 1.0.1 dlls should work, as well as Flugan's wrapper.

4) 10-18-15: Latest version: Mordor_1.1.16_v2.7z

5) 5-4-17: Latest version: Mordor_1.2.57_v1.7z

Update to latest version of 3Dmigoto, including SBS/TAB support and Win10.

Update for driver 350.12:  Game is at least partly broken, and may be unplayable.  Cannot see any text in Sauron's Army screen, aiming flickers in and out, second-chance QTE is not always available. Works correctly on 347.52.  Might be possible to fix this with an imported profile.
Update for driver 355.82: Seems to work again, assuming this problem is driver related.

But I am still getting some mountains in distance in 2d popping out.

Is it just me? Is there a way to fix that?

Manually copy the two files (remove the.jpg extension first) into the ShaderFixes folder.

    5. Also, thanks for the images. That is fog image doubling, not sure how I missed that, it looks like you are in the first map there? And yes, icons are always on top right now. They can be moved into depth, but the menus go so screwy we are waiting to update the 3DMigoto wrapper before modifying that any further for now.

Just a suggestion, try increasing your depth and convergence, you seem to have a really flat image on two of your screen shots...

  19. No matter what resolution I use, 3dvision software still thinks its running in 1080p, thus won't switch to 3D compatibility mode. Get the "current mode 1920x1080x60 not HDMI 3D compatible." Any thoughts? just updated driver to 344.75 running gtx670. Much appreciated, as always.

    1. Fixed - changed the desktop resolution to 1080 @ 24 hz, then ran the game just fine.

    2. Yes, HDMI only supports 720p@60, or 1080p@24.

You sure you want to run Compatibility Mode though? This fix makes it work properly in true-3D, and is quite a lot better experience. ctrl-alt-f11 to switch between modes.

  22. hello ! this fix is not needed anymore. I just used it after the installation of the game (i got it on Humble Bundle for steam), but it caused me bad settings. When i deleted all files from this fix, the 3DVision was fine !

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is only true if you find Compatibility Mode acceptable. Most people using 3D will enjoy true-3D more than CM. CM suffers from low convergence, low depth, haloing around close objects, and shimmer on UI elements. But, it's always your choice.

I would humbly suggest that 'not needed anymore' is an exaggeration.

      Delete
    2. thank you for your answer, bob. i just got 3DVision for 2 weeks only, i'm however a newbie. In fact, i don't see what you mean with "True 3D" and with CM. Compatibility mode is ON, and rated as "Good" by Nvidia. When the compatibility mode is activated, do you mean it's not "true 3D". CM is not "true 3D" with maybe less accurate settings ? As i said just before, i tried Mordor using directly the files from Helix Mod, and it was near unplayable, so i think there was some updates. I tried Mordor some weeks ago with a cracked release, there was no rated advice from Nvidia. In fact, i don't really know how the updates have been done since. When a game is not rated , but after some month belongs rated "good", is it only a question of settings in 3DVision or is there a work on the game itself ? how can you explain me the game is unplayable with actual files from Helix Mod ? you should try it now with the last release of the game and tell me how is it for you please.

      Delete
    3. In order to use correctly the Helix mod files, do you mean we must desactivate compatibility mode (we can ?) ? my game was maybe unplayable with the helix mod files because i didn't touch anything before to launch the game.

      Delete
    4. You either use CM, or you use our fix, they are not compatible. The fix works fine and makes it 3D Vision Ready, not just Good.

To disable CM, you use Ctrl-Alt-F11, with advanced settings enabled in the control panel. Have the green text up, when you switch, and you'll see it say "not recommended" for true-3D, which is what we fix.

As a newbie, it's not a good approach to come to us and say it's broken or unnecessary without doing your research.

      Delete
    5. damned, i already posted 2 answers to your post and i noticed it didn't work. As i said, i apologize. I did like you said and i'm enjoyed :) it works fine :)
I have the same problems than "eNemy Solar", and i lost a lot of times because of this^^ (at the accurate moment when we are near to death i don't see the indications to move the L button (from the Xbox360 wireless pad) in the circle & push the right button. and the HUD which appears & disappears make the eyes tired.

More of that, i see than when i look on the face of our character, up hair appears on the 2 sides of the skull like Ghost Hair. did you noticed that too ?

PS : i'm using last 347.09 Geforce drivers, If i take a previous release, is it ok ? (like 344.75)

      Delete
    6. Using 344.75 should be fine with this game. I've used that version and don't see the missing UI elements.

For the 2 sides hair: Did you read:
      1. Disable Order Independent Transparency.

That fixes the hair and some other problems.

    7. thank you bob !! i didn't noticed it. i wish you a happy new year ;)) I have another question, it's not the right topic but do you know if there is a means to fix problems in Battlefield 4 for 3Dvision ? it's working fine in CM but now -thanks to you- i discovered the REAL 3Dvision, it's awesome but there is a huge problem with our weapon, which makes the game unplayable.

      Delete
  23. CM is awful, this fix is awesome! Thank you very much!!!

But I have a problem since I use driver 347.09: the HUD disappears at certain places, certain view directions. Sometimes during QTE or while aiming. If I turn 3d off (ctrl + T) the HUD comes back, I push ctrl+T again HUD disappears. I turn away HUD appears, I turn back to certain direction and HUD disappears. I think it relates to some effects (shaders or I do not know), HUD disappears if these are visible, rendered. I guess …

Does anyone else have this problem as well?

  29. Thanks I was able to get it working by rolling back my driver then re-installing it. My driver I guess didn't like that I had added a card after it had been updated. Definitely always reinstall drivers after ANY hardware change. The drivers are not universal, the installer only installs what it needs for hardware that it sees.

    2. hey anon, if you wouldn't mind sharing; what exactly did you do? I'm running two Titan X's sli and the game crashes on me every 2-5 minutes and preforms rather poorly in that short time span.

      Delete
    3. Start with a clean install of the driver using DDU. In general Mordor runs very well, so having crashes 2-5 minutes is definitely unusual. For example, I played the entire game without a single crash.

    3. Just played this today, and the SLI scaling was terrific for 2 way SLI. Definitely was working with driver 350.12.

    4. Hi. I just tested my Mordor with the same drivers as you and SLI is still not working.. so no idea why you got SLI working in 3D Vision...

      Delete
    5. What are you seeing? "not working" is not exactly a lot to go on.

I'm seeing full scaling, game plays, but I am getting a text problem with the UI that was introduced with 350.12. (Cannot see any text in Sauron's Army screen, aiming flickers in and out, second-chance QTE is not always available.)

Works correctly and is totally playable on 347.52.

    6. Hi bo3b,

I tested with nvidia drivers 347.52 and I confirm that 2-way-SLI works very well. I tried 3-way-sli but that is still broken and doesn't work. The only thing is that depth is all over the place and I can't see well. Thank you for letting me know about the 347.52 drivers! I wish there was a way to fix so I could use 3-way-SLI in 3D vision... oh well.

      Best Regards,

      UB

      Delete
    7. Yes, 3-way SLI would be nice, but 3D Vision doesn't support it. I experimented with 3 or 4 games, and none of them were faster in 3D with 3-way. (or 4 way either.) It's fairly clear that 3D Vision restricts SLI.

  33. Awsome fix!! Game looks really cool with the fix. Just a quick question,I'm playing at 70% depth,is that too much! I'm having a bit of trouble with the bow especially with enemies that are far away, mainly because you kinda have to put the enemy's head between the 2 cursors. I'm pretty good at it as is as I've gotten used to it but just wondering if you guys have any tips settings wise? I'm using the 1.1.16z beta fix btw.

Another question,I don't see any difference when hitting the x or c button on keyboard. Has this been removed in 1.1.16? I'm using xbox controller (ps4 but emulated as xbox) will the key presets be in set like when heading to the menu etc? I have advance key bindings on in 3D panel,do I need to press ctrl to make the presets work?

Sorry lots of questions I know. The fix is awesome in-game and I don't mind the menus. I just wonder if the menus just really have some weird rendering? Like the model of the main character being on 2 places.

    Thanks again. :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Doesn't sound like it's working correctly. The aiming with the bow should be pushing the crosshair to depth, so that you can put crosshair directly over an Uruk, no double vision necessary.

x and c settings are no longer in the 1.1.16 beta version, I made it more automatic using 'm' and 'esc' when you enter the menus, and using 'w' to reset to normal when you start moving forward. You should be able to turn it on/off in menus using F3/F4, and F2 should cycle different depths while in game (or in menus if you hit F3).

Since you are using XBox controller, you'll need to go in and change the settings to use Xbox buttons as I neglected to add those. Just change the obvious ones like aiming to be Key = XB_RIGHT_TRIGGER, and the others to match your controller setup.

      Delete
    2. BTW, if you add setup [Key*] items for the controller, please send me your file and I'll add them in the next release.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the tips. I've updated the .ini file to work with XBOX buttons. I had to set the "Menu Mode=off" command to "B" cause I won't be able to bind it to walk like with a keyboard. It works for the most part except when having to navigate the menu a lot. If you have any better ideas let me know.

I have yet to test the aiming again as I binded it to left trigger and just read your post now saying I should bind it to right trigger. I have to leave for work now but will test again as soon as I can.

How do you want me to send you the .ini file?

      Thanks.

      Delete
    4. Oh, actually bind the keys however you think it's right, I don't play with controller, so have no idea what works there.

You can send the file by email or by PM on the forum.

      Delete
    5. Alright, I'll test the aim function out with Right Trigger as opposed to Left Trigger which didn't seem to work. My guess is once you press another button, the "hold" function stops working and goes back to default. I could be wrong though so I'll have to check it out. So the result I'm looking for is that I won't see 2 cursors and that the cursor would be directly "on" whatever I'm aiming at?

Sorry for the noobness, still can't figure out where I can send you the file. I can copy/paste the content on to your NVIDIA page, is that the only way? Can't even find where I can PM you here at helix blog. Also can't find your email anywhere.

Will send you the file once I've tested it out.

      Thanks.

    6. Bad comment, let me revise that. Since you are using the PS4 controller, the names might be different. The names used must match the settings for the [Key_*] sections. Not sure how to find out what the system thinks the names are.

Let me know if that seems to be the case, as we can add some defaults to our named lists. You can email to helixmod [at] bo3b.net or use PM on the 3D Vision forums. If you aren't on the 3D Vision forums, you should, lots of terrific info there.

    1. If it's too annoying, you can likely find it easily enough and just disable that glow effect. There are something like 3 or 4 glow effects, so losing one would be OK. I think I know the one you are talking about, I don't think I could get it to work properly because it shows up both in-game and in-menu. Best to disable it I guess.

  37. Hi bo3b,

I recently got this game to play it in 3d but have been having a minor issue. I'm using driver 361.75 and when I look in certain directions or when it rains, my HUD flickers in and out. I also notice the entire screen dims a bit as well. I was wondering if you had any insight on how to resolve this issue? Would I have to revert back to driver 355.xx? Thank you for your time.

    a helixmod fan.

    1. Not sure, haven't tried latest drivers on this game. We think that this glitch was related to drivers, but aren't certain. For example, PirateGuyBrush found it happened with particular save games, so it's less clear. Try starting a fresh game (different save slot) to see if it's still happening.

    2. I will give that a try and let you know what happens. Thanks for the quick reply!

    3. I tried using a different save slot and reinstalling and starting a new game. So far no luck. I'm going to try and find the old driver that it worked on and see if it works after installing that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!

    4. I remember thyere was SLI issues when game first came out....
So I am guessing you are not running a legit copy of game. Update game.

    5. Err sli issues being hud flickering.

    6. Or just try disabling SLI all together and see what happens first.

    7. Alim - I have been having this HUD issue as well using the latest drivers on Windows 7 (361.75). Digging through the forums found that it may be the motion blur / AA setting which needs to be: FXAA+Camera+Object needs to be on. I think I have just had FXAA on, going to test this tonight.

I have read it reported to work using driver 344.65, no SLI and starting a new save, proper settings (disable order independent transparency and enable fxaa+camera+object) although I hope it doesn't need to come to that.

I'll also note that none of the preset shortcut keys have worked for me either but I have been getting by as the actual gameplay is perfect besides the HUD flickering / dimming.

  38. Hey folks,

First, thank you so much. So damn much. Best 3D experience I've had in a while.

Second, I've got an intermittent issue when viewing Sauron's Army. Typically when you mouse over one of the captains you see a popup on the right side of the screen. It's intermittently there or not there. The only pattern I suspect is that it was working and then stopped working after I died. Haven't figured out a way to bring it back.

Lastly, I don't see any talk about profiles. Is everyone using the default Nvidia Profile?

    Thanks for any input!

From the Geforce forum. I know that forum is usually the other half of the conversation here, but forgot to check before posting. Sorry.

Also running currently latest drivers 361.75.

    2. I ran across that problem long back as well, it's in the main thread. Don't have a solid answer, but there were several drivers that made it work correctly. Pretty sure. Seemed to also maybe be related to game saves, as PirateGuyBrush started a new game after it glitched, and it worked after that.

Most likely solution is to run the driver that seemed to fix the problem. (Can't recall at moment, but it's in the thread. Maybe the one above 355.82)

For profile, I used the standard game profile that came with the driver.

  39. Hello,

the 3D fix works for me. But in the text is a paragraph about special keys, that change the depth. Like F2, F3, F4, W, Esc etc. But none of those keys change anything for me. Can someone please explain those keys to me? What should happen, if I use those. What is necessary for me, to use those keys?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Should work. Latest fix, Mordor_1.1.16_v2.7z includes those key bindings. Might be worth trying to reinstall fix from scratch by using uninstall.bat, then copy everything back in. Make sure you are not in CM. Check mode with Ctrl-Alt-Ins.

      Delete
    2. Thank you, it worked. The link to 1.1.16 is under "older version", of course I didn't looked there.

I have one problem though, I can switch different depth settings by using F2, but as soon as I enter the menu with Esc or M this setting is forgotten and W or F4 go back to the deepest depth (instead of the depth I set up).

    3. Looks like I made a mistake with the d3dx.ini file, where I didn't add the type=toggle to those keys. Or, if I remember correctly, there was no good way to make it keep track of where it was because other keys would throw it off. Like enter with M, then Esc to exit gets it out of sync.

No way to make this fix perfect, there is too much interaction between the game and menus, and you can get one right at the expense of the other. I consciously decided to make playing good at the expense of sub-optimal menus.

Probably your best bet is to edit the d3dx.ini and look for the key for "`" back tick key, and set that to what you want for game play, and remove the 'toggle'. Then you can just hit that whenever you like to set your playing depth.

  41. Hello I seem to be having an issue both with fix installed without. When 3d Vision is enabled but off I get a double image in the top right corner when i turn to the left, as i keep turning another image appears in the image of the 2nd one. (Its the same image on the main screen just in the top corner...) when i activate the 3d vision the menus seem to work but as soon as I go into game the screen shows a few outlines but the majority of it is just blue. When I jump down from the tower the majority of the screen is just orangy brown. I am attempting a fresh install of the game but if this persists I will update.

    1. I've seen that sort of picture in picture effect while debugging other problems. Most likely is a corrupted install of some form. Try uninstall.bat, then reinstall fix. If that doesn't change it, try reinstalling your driver. Also can try disabling the shader caching in NVidia control panel.

Make sure it runs properly in 3D (looking bad), before installing our fix.

  42. Hey, thanks for the fix. I decided to replay cause i played mostly @2D and yet not the DLCs. It works great except that the should be some convergence change for normal menus which i added manually.
Anyway. What's the most recent working driver (355.82 is quite old)? I use 368.51 and i get missing text in Saurons Army (yet not at the beginning, just after the first main ork mission - ratbag i think).

  43. I have started playing the other day and suffered the HUD disappearing and image dimming problems at certain camera angles. It's fixed if I fully enable FXAA + motion blur. But I don't like them, so I just dumped both pixel shaders and disabled their effects (I solved a compiling problem of the FXAA shader but it's broken if I don't "discard" the effect, but discarding it was my intention anyway).

Place the content of https://www.dropbox.com/s/8bjqjahkt3e1lqj/shadow_of_mordor_blur_and_fxaa_disable.7z?dl=0 in the "ShadowOfMordor\x64\ShaderFixes" folder. Or place only one of the two effects if you want to keep the other.

  45. Hey everyone,

So I'm having an issue with this game, and some others, where they are stuck in compatibility mode.

I just upgraded to a 980 ti and to driver 376. I've tried installing all the fixes, from the oldest to latest with no luck.

I have the extra key shortcuts enabled in the control panel, but ctrl alt f11 doesn't do anything.

I previously had the game running fine, but not sure what's going on now.

Both the witcher 3 and rise of tomb raider were having the same issue, and all I did to fix it was re install the helix mod fixes.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

  46. Is there a way to put all hud elements including menus at screen depth? The x parameter is already 0 but it seems that not all menus follow this value. If I could do this trick, the game would be perfect for me. I found another solution for the crossair. I use a very high convergence just at the moment i hold the aim button. The crosshair is 2d but it feels in depth.

    1. There isn't any way to get the hud all at depth. The hud is tied into in-game elements as well, like glow and fire effects, so changing them makes other game elements break. I spent a lot of time trying to work out something, but there just isn't a good answer.

With newer versions of 3Dmigoto it might be possible to do texture mapping and find just the hud textures and make that work, but it's a lot of work, and I won't have time to do that. If someone else is interested though, it is possible that technique will work.

  47. Hello, I've played the game before, with 0.99.4 fix

now - having purchased the DLCs - I discover there have been two more fixes (thanks for your work), that work very well, yet the Steam overlay - and the photo mode as well - won't work (while with 0.99.4 they did fine)

please, is there a fix to that?
    thanks

    1. OK, I took a quick look at this, and reproduce the problem. Doesn't crash, but Steam overlay is disabled. None of the logical workarounds worked for me.

Sorry, don't have an answer for this.

You might go ahead and use the latest d3dx.ini and ShaderFixes folder, but then drop in the old 0.99.4 dlls. That should still work I think, and thus get the fixes in the shaders themselves.

    1. Sorry about that, normally we try to make them .zip files instead of .7z. Using 7-zip is the way to go. I just tried it using that, and it opens OK. WinRar also works.

  49. SLI Scaling with the latest fix and 3D Migoto is around 50-60% that means I get around 30-40 fps in Surround.
In 2D it is around 90-99%.
With Older fix Version I get good SLI Scaling but game is crashing to desktop within 1-2 minutes without any error. 2D is working fine. I am Playing in 2D Surround now.

    Any solution?

  50. Running the game now on RTX2060 with drivers 446.14 + 3D Vision driver, the fix is broken. The base game without the fix is actually almost perfect, but there's some artifacts around the main character (like a blurry halo textures). With the fix it's actually worse than clean install.

The game's probably too old for anyone to address it but just posting here so maybe others know as well :)

    Cheers

    2. Actually I think this fix still works fine- but you are running Compatibility Mode, not real 3D. You need to disable that using alt-ctrl-f11. That's where that halo around the character comes from.

    3. Thanks for the reply. Nothing happens when I hit that combination. When I enable advanced in-game settings in the Control Panel and click ok and then open the dialog box again, the "advanced" checkbox is unchecked - maybe for some reason the driver is not enabling these advanced key-shortcuts in-game and that's why Ctrl+Alt+F11 doesn't work? Have you seen this before?

      Delete
    4. Haven't seen that before, should work. I just tested this again in HelixVision, and it was working well. Win10 1903, Driver 446.14. You can see what mode you are in by using Ctrl-Alt-Ins to show the Nvidia overlay.

    5. yeah, when I bring that up the little box in the bottom right corner is all grey instead of showing the usual 3DV green text...really weird.

      My windows version is 1909.

Ah well, I guess i'll see what happens, maybe update the driver or something.

If you can, can you check Shadow of Tomb Raider as well? I can't get that to work properly, the 3DV option disappears for me from the options menu if i disable DX12.

      thx for the help

      Delete
    6. Grey box means your driver is not right. Do a DDU reinstall. Easiest way to get 3D back is to use HelixVision or 3DFM. You can also tweak a setting in the d3dx.ini profile to force it to real 3D.

For Shadow, go to mtbs3d.com forums and look there. I can't remember the details, but I know people have discussed this.

    7. Uninstalled everything with DDU, installed 451.67, 3D Fix manager - all is good now, thanks :)
