Rise of the Tomb Raider (improvements for the official 3D mode)

3D Vision fix for Rise of the Tomb Raider, made for the official 3D mode and intended for people that don't want to downgrade the game version to use the other community fix. This fix is focused on screen space reflections (water, puddles) and specular reflections. Nothing else.

For the fully community made fix, go here: https://helixmod.blogspot.com/2016/02/rise-of-tomb-raider-3d-vision-fix.html

Remember: these two fixes aren't compatible with each other. You can't use both at the same time.

Fixed
- Screen space reflections are now at the depth they should be.
- Realistic specular reflections. Mostly for characters, water, items that you can inspect and some geometry.

Known issues
- Using this fix will lower your CPU performance compared to not using anything, around 10% in the most demanding areas (tested with my i7 7700K).
- The fix is mostly done with regex. The first time new areas load, you will notice some stutters. After that, they will be gone forever.

Installation
- Download this file and extract its contents in the "Rise of the Tomb Raider" folder, where "ROTTR.exe" is.
- Run the game.

Hotkeys (numbers aren't from the numpad)
0: multiple depth presets for specular reflections that don't have a proper "realistic" depth. It goes from surface depth to full depth. Surface depth by default. I don't have any specific recommendation.

  1. is it possible to use it with Top/Bottom ?
    It crashes with : - T/B ON in 3dmigoto
    - 3d ON in-game (not side by side)
    - DirectX 11

    1. No way to do this that I can see. The game supports native 3D Vision, so no 3Dmigoto is required of course. Adding 3Dmigoto, I don't get crashes, but the 3D Vision is force enabled by the game, and this makes the T/B display like 4 displays instead, with a L/R for each half. SBS shader doesn't work here.

You could maybe experiment with having the game not enable 3D, but have 3DMigoto force 3D on itself. Might be able to get a more normal 3D setup that way, but also more likely to have broken 3D effects.

    2. thx for your answer bo3b ! ROTR is definively dead now :)
The performance with old buid (used by helifax fix) was awful , and ,in 2d , third person games are uninteresting ^^

    3. Just to clarify for anyone who runs across these comments later- the built in render works great and is definitely playable in either 3D Vision or SBS. There just is no way to get a T/B mode (or checkerboard or interlaced) with their renderer.

    4. Can you explain why running the game in native SBS (tomb raider executable 3d) has 40-50% more fps than 3dvision mode enabled?

  2. Awesome thanks for this, now i can finally play it ...

  3. hi everyone,I'm testing the game with my RTX2080TI with 425.31 driver, the game version is 1.0 build 767.2_64. I've installed the game since yesterday and the problems I've encountered are various and inexplicable. So, in DirectX11 with full screen and exclusive full screen activated, stereoscopic 3D off, the game crashes ... often even before you get to the game's home screen, same thing if I turn it off exclusive full screen ... it seems that the only way I have to play it in 3D vision, either by activating DirectX12 ... but it is full of flickering and the shadows, as well as the reflections, are rendered and displayed differently for the left eye and right eye .... so for each eye, I have a different image ... in this way, at the moment it turns out to be unplayable ... is there anything I can do? you can help me? Thank you in advance!!

    1. Just tested again, and it's working well here. Win10 1803, Driver 419.67, 1080ti, Steam version (not sure exact version, but up to date). DX11 is working correctly, Stereo control in-game works. 3D is Vision Ready. No crashes in either 2D or 3D.

Not sure what would be different for your setup. Do the usual rigmarole of verify game, and clean delete and reinstall from scratch. Don't install any 3Dmigoto. Game argues with SteamVR, so be sure any VR is off.

  4. Hi bo3b! first of all....excuse for my bad english, I'm italian...and thanks for your reply! What do you mean with "usual rigmarole of verify game"? unfortunately I dont'know how to set VR off in game...I didn't see any option about it, in the game settings and at last, this masterotaku's fix....is not 3D migoto based itself? are you advising me to do a clean install of the game ... without any 3D vision fix? help me understand ... please ... thank you so much!

    1. Working OK here. Previously I used no fix installed, this time I use fix installed and still works OK. I get a hang once in awhile with fix installed, but 3D is OK and mostly working. v1.0 build 820.0_64 is the Steam version. Yours seems to be out of date. If you are using the old version on purpose, you would want to use the original fix, not the one from masterotaku.

Be sure to get the game running in 3D before applying any fix. Drivers could broken, game corrupted, any number of things.

  5. ok ... I found your own build 820.0_64 .... I tried the game as it is ... without any 3D vision fix ... same identical problems of shadows and overlapping lights ... I tried them all the manners, I installed again the masterotaku fix .... nothing to do, unfortunately nothing seems to work! will it be a problem related to my RTX2080TI? I'm going crazy ... because the 3D vision game must be really cool! I just have to find build 610.1, apply the community fix ... and cross my fingers .... otherwise I don't really know where to head ... thank you very much for your help!

    1. Are you running a bootleg game? If so, your life is just a lot harder than it needs to be. Bootlegs break all kinds of stuff which is why we don't recommend it.

Should be no difference for 2080ti. Might be difference if you are running Win10 1903, but driver 425.31 should be fine there anyway.

Does it run in 2D? Set the resolution how you want, then set it to windowed, not exclusive. Run that in 2D. If that works, then enable 3D Vision, but using Anaglyph/Discover mode so that it doesn't have to change video settings. Run that. If that crashes, then something is wrong with your system, and you need to back up. Like reinstall the driver from scratch using DDU.

  6. thank you for the reply bo3b! So i answer your questions: 1) yes, it is not an original copy .... but also with another cracked copy, I had the exact same problem 2) yes, I'm running Win10 1903 OS with 425.31 driver, but I have just finished both The Witcher 2, and Subnautica in 3D vision ... without any problem 3)in 2D works like a charm! but I have to disable 3D vision from the nvidia control panel .... otherwise in the game, even if the 3D leaves it disabled, in directX 12 the 3D view starts automatically. Now I try with anaglyph/discover mode...as you suggested...

  7. so ... I started the game in 2D and then in 3D Anaglyph / Discover as you suggested me to do, the test gave these results: 1) in 2D with exclusive screen disabled, it works perfectly. 2) with 3D anaglyph / discover and 3D disabled in game, it works, obviously in 2D, but during the benchmark, you can notice annoying shadows, scaled and in the form of pixels (keep in mind that I text the game, looking at the screen main where are the settings and then starting the benchmark .... so far I have never started a new game) plus there is a very slight stuttering effect 3) with 3D anaglyph / discover and 3D enabled in game with directX12, the game starts .... but it is impossible to visualize it and it remains in the background, I can only exit via task manager 4) in directX11 the 3D in game has two options, either disabled or side by side and in this way, with anaglyph / discover it works, but I have the display split in half with two identical images .... side by side precisely .... and nothing is really discouraged ... :(

    1. OK, don't know what to tell you there. When I run the game in Anaglyph, I can set the the mode to 3D On in the launcher, and it runs in 3D correctly (red/blue). Pretty much the same as running with regular 3D Vision.

I don't think DX12 is worth using because it doesn't properly support 3D.

I don't see stuttering or other glitches. This suggests it's either a bad game, or you might try DDU scrub of your driver.

All I can tell you is that the Steam version works perfectly correctly, including the masterotaku fix, and it's something on your end.

  8. I have now installed the Nvidia 417.01 drivers, I read a post on geforce forum, where they say they are the best for my rtx2080ti with 3D vision, I reinstalled the build 767.2_64 of the game, one of the most recent, retested in various ways, without no 3D vision fix ... but nothing ... usual problems ... the problem is that in DirectX11 the game tries to switch to 3D vision, but immediately afterwards the screen of my PG278QR turns black, sometimes it flashes and the game gets block ... I can only exit with task manager ... now I try with the masterotaku fix .... but I have very little hope .... I just need the Nvidia driver uninstallation via DDU .... reinstall the drivers 417.01 ... and see if anything changes .... otherwise stop ... I give up! thank you very much again for your help ....

  10. then ... maybe maybe something I could start to understand ... at least where the problem really is, every time I tried to start the game in DirectX11 ... as I said, my display gives me a black screen ... and sometimes it flashes ... during this process, I can see a message in red, for about a fraction of a second .... now I managed to block the message in red ... which says: "WARNING: attempt to run stereoscopic 3D in non-stereo display mode, please change to an acceptable mode.See documentation for acceptable stereoscopic 3D modes". Here ... this is a beginning ... I don't know what to do ... but it's a start ...

  11. EDIT: SOLUTION FOUND!! in win10, 1. right click on the game .exe and, under properties/compatibility, disable full screen optimizations.
    2. Run the game under DX11/exclusive full-screen
    3. Set the display to 144hz/match the desktop refresh speed (not sure about this one... I am running at 144hz - you may need to experiment a little)

    1. Great! Glad to hear you got it sorted. I should have recommended that you use 3D Fix Manager, as it sets that retarded Win10 Disable Full Screen Optimizations by default.

  12. With the current version of the game, it crash when we launch it...
The only way i have found is to install an older version of the game.
RIght click on the game in Steam library, choose settings and go in BETA windows. Choose Build767_2 - Build 767.2
Then u need to make like lay72 have explained.

The only problem is: when you launch the game, u can't switch in 2D or it would crash and u can't just go back to windows or the game will crash too !

  13. how to get the cracked rottr v1.0 build 820.0_6?

  14. I believe I had a similar issue with "Rise" - that somehow got fixed - which is now surfacing on Shadow of the Tomb Raider -

Apart from the first time of playing the game - every subsequent time I get a black video screen / but can hear the audio.

I think it is something to do with that stupid persistent request that pops up (via my internet browser) to link the game to Epic - even though in my Epic account I have tried to adjust this to either become permanent / or "revoked".

P.S. I am also trying to play in Nvidia 3D vision - and it seems the game launcher options are messed up - if you turn DX12 "off" you lose 3D vision option of "On", and only get "side by side".

Any clues? I have read up on a long thread on these forums from the Helifax guys, but am still stuck!

  15. DX12 must be turned off, but Exclusive Fullscreen has to be turned on instead—did you note this?

  16. The recent update of 7th of December 2021 just seems to have broken 3D capability (messed shaders, or what it might be). I recommend reverting to beta 813.

    3. Hello, i reversed on 813, but when i launch the game in DX11 i got black screen with 3D fix manager... Same in DX12... How did u manage it to launch it in 3D ? Thanks !

  17. version 820 and if you are so inclined remember xatab, not with us anymore but left a few nice remnants for gaming history and in this case for nice stereo gaming goodness.

  18. Old-time 3d Vision guy here. Haven't messed with it much since delving into VR, but I recently realized I could stream ROTTR in SBS 4k to my LG 4k Passive 3DTV via Moonlight and my Nvidia Shield. Works GREAT! However, especially in the outdoor scenes, some of the textures are still messed up. I applied this fix, but still the problem persists.

Is it just that there is nothing I can do, or does this fix not work for SBS mode?

    Thanks!
